“Had a bit of a late start,” Masefield sings at the top of his debut single, “Detours.” After two decades of gigging, touring, and subbing as a keyboard sideman in the rock/Americana/songwriter worlds (Dave Hause, Will Hoge, Fantastic Cat, Southside Johnny, Mike Frazier) music directing, recording, and producing, he’s starting a new chapter as Mark Masefield, singer/songwriter.
While Masefield’s mindset supports the chorus’ initial go-with-the-flow mantra, “a detour can become the destination,” the narrator of the song quickly grows skeptical; “That’s a hopeful thought, maybe I’ll stay home. It’s so hard to lean in when you can just let go.”
With a piano driven foundation, the introspective musings are enforced by a steady floor tom heartbeat and supported by minimal cello, guitar, and synthesizer flourishes.
